Public transport will be free on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve so Victorians can
take advantage of the opportunity to celebrate with family and friends across the
state this year.
Christmas Day
Metropolitan and regional public transport will be free from 3am on Christmas Day 25
December until 3am on 26 December Boxing Day. Metropolitan trains, trams, and
most buses will run to a normal Sunday timetable. V/Line train services will also run
to a Sunday timetable while scheduled V/Line coaches will run to an altered
timetable. Free travel applies to Economy Class only on V/Line trains and for travel
wholly within Victoria.
Passengers using a myki are not required to touch on and off and will not be charged
if they do. V/Line passengers still need to book their travel on reserved services and
will be issued a ticket free of charge. Passengers who have already booked their
ticket on a reserved service can visit their nearest station to arrange a refund.
New Year’s Eve
Metropolitan and regional public transport will be free from 6pm on New Year’s Eve
31 December until 6am on New Year’s Day 1 January. Long distance V/Line
services which commence their journey before 6pm but complete their journey after
6pm will also be free.
The first V/Line service departing Melbourne to any destination on New Year’s Day
will also be free, even if the departure time is after 6am. Free travel applies to
Economy Class only on V/Line trains and for travel wholly within Victoria.
A normal Saturday timetable will be in place on New Year’s Eve, with additional
services operating after midnight so that passengers can get home safely.
• Metropolitan trains will run to a 5 to 15 minute frequency between midnight
and 1:45am, a 30-minute frequency between 1:45am and 2:45am, and every
hour from 2:45am
• On the tram network, most services will operate all night – most services will
operate all night – running to a 5 to 15 minute frequency between midnight
and 3am, and every 60 minutes from 3am.
• Night Network bus service will run all night.
• V/Line Night Network Coaches will operate.
